Getting from good to great: A strategy of success
Article Outline
The American Academy of Nursing is committed to shaping health policy and practice through the use of knowledge. During our 33 years, we have compiled evidence on a variety of topics, drawing from the work of our talented Academy Fellows. More effort is required. We can—and must—better gather and disseminate that evidence, maximizing the Academy’s impact. Over the next 3 months, the Academy hopes to engage the Fellows and others in creating a strategic plan to guide the efforts that will help us achieve our mission. The draft plan is on our Web site (www.aannet.org) and I encourage you to review and contribute to it. Consider the following questions as you read the draft:
Jim Collins, author of Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap and Others Don’t1, identifies the ability of organizations to adapt quickly to changing times as a defining characteristic of great companies.1 The Academy is a good organization of talented nursing and health professional leaders. The use of our assets—our Fellows—in achieving the goals of the organization is essential. What is the most effective approach to leverage the Academy’s assets to address the demand for solutions to current and future health care problems? The draft strategic plan outlines approaches that build on our previous work and expands our capacity to act quickly to issues as they arise.
The primary role of the newly hired executive director of the Academy, Patricia Ford-Roegner, RN, MSW, FAAN, is to seek new opportunities to deploy the Fellowship to achieve our mission. Ms. Ford-Roegner brings experience in health policy and the positioning of organizations to achieve their goals. Working with the board of directors, she will assist us in mapping out a plan to improve our productivity, secure resources, partner with private and public organizations as key partners, disseminate our work and engage us in activities to support the greater good. It is our responsibility to be of use to society as an organization of learned leaders.
The intent of the plan is to define key strategies to successfully and efficiently achieve our mission. Our journey to make a societal difference is possible through the use of our Fellows, key organizational partners, and appropriate use of resources. We need your ideas and recommendations about what is needed to get us from good to great! (Please send comments to www.info@aannet.org)
