The American Academy of Nursing recognizes and supports the fundamental importance
of integrating the social, environmental, and economic experiences of women who are
at risk of or living with HIV infection into all aspects of HIV prevention, care,
and treatment. The Academy is committed to upholding the rights of all women to be
recognized as having unique perspectives and experiences. These perspectives and experiences
may be different from those of men at risk of or living with HIV infection. Acknowledging
and addressing a women's empowerment strategy in understanding the social determinants
of health in HIV prevention, care, and treatment are essential to reducing health
inequities and improving health outcomes. This strategy can also shape social and
physical environments that promote health and wellness in women. The best way to understand
the experiences of women locally and globally is to include their voices in the design
and implementation of prevention programs. This perspective is essential to assure
that such programs are feasible and sustainable in the context of women's economic,
political, and social environments.
